It is essential that our society take responsibility to conserve and wisely manage our natural resources. Careers in the public and private entities that manage and use these resources are expanding rapidly as the critical nature of issues such as water shortage, climate change, habitat destruction and food instability become more apparent. Individuals that are trained in agriculture and natural resource management, in particular the application of agriculture, plant, horticulture and environmental science, will be perfectly positioned to solve these issues and take advantage of these exciting career opportunities. This curriculum focuses on giving students a basic understanding of the proper structure and function of plant systems that underlie healthy ecosystems and provide a sustainable food supply. Competencies taught, cover plant breeding, soil analysis, integrated pest management, irrigation methods, ecological restoration practices, and sustainable agriculture practices such as minimal tillage, crop rotation, poly-culture, and natural fertilizers. Students should consult with a counselor to determine whether this degree is the best option for their transfer goals.
