The Phlebotomy Technician program provides comprehensive training for individuals seeking entry-level employment in the healthcare field as a certified phlebotomist. This course blends didactic instruction with hands-on skill development, covering essential topics such as human anatomy and physiology (with a focus on the circulatory system), medical terminology, and safety protocols like infection control and OSHA standards. Students will master blood collection methods, including capillary skin punctures, and the various venipuncture techniques, while learning the critical legal and ethical implications of patient care and specimen handling.
Successful completion of PHLE 020 Introduction to Phlebotomy: The Clinical Laboratory Profession, PHLE 025 Basic Laboratory Procedures, and PHLE 030 Venipuncture Laboratory prepares the students to sit for the national certification exam offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Finally, students enrolled in PHLE 040 Phlebotomy Laboratory Experience will participate in a 40-hour clinical externship, gaining hands-on experience in real healthcare settings. With these credentials, graduates can pursue employment opportunities in hospitals, diagnostic labs, public health clinics, and blood donation centers, with a full understanding of how a certified phlebotomist's work directly impacts a patient’s diagnosis and treatment.
