PHLE 020 Introduction to Phlebotomy: The Clinical Laboratory Profession (0.0 Units)
This course will introduce the student to the functions and responsibilities of the clinical laboratory assistant and phlebotomist in all clinical laboratory departments. Students will explore the importance of clinical laboratory safety, regulatory agencies, infection control policies, standard operating procedures, and professional communication. The student will also gain an understanding of medical terminology, the patient's bill of rights, pre-analytical evaluation of specimens, laboratory information, and data management systems. For clinicals (PHLE 040): All Students must have current malpractice insurance, health clearance, TB test results, drug screen, and background check. Students must be 18 years of age prior to clinicals.

PHLE 025 Basic Laboratory Procedures (0.0 Units)
Designed to introduce the student to basic clinical laboratory procedures common to all diagnostic-related tasks. The student will learn to comply with mandated regulations on safety practices, follow standard operating procedures, perform pre-analytical procedures, use the laboratory information system to receive and process specimens, operate basic lab equipment, and demonstrate effective communication (with various patients of age, gender identities, and ethnicities).

PHLE 030 Venipuncture Laboratory (0.0 Units)
This course will provide students with comprehensive hands-on venipuncture experience. Students will practice patient identification, venipuncture, specimen collection and handling, standard precautions, laboratory safety, and basic medical terminology. Concepts of diversity and culturally competent care for individuals from culture groups within the United States are integrated.

PHLE 040 Phlebotomy Laboratory Experience (0.0 Units)
Provides direct patient care experience for students seeking venipuncture certification. Includes on-site experience in obtaining and processing specimens for a clinical laboratory. For clinicals (PHLE 040): All Students must have current malpractice insurance, health clearance, TB test results, drug screen, and background check. Students must be 18 years of age prior to clinicals.
