Environmental Technology (ENVT)

This introductory course is designed for students interested in the field of water distribution. The course will cover water supplies, principles of hydraulics, and management of a water utility. The course will focus on operation and maintenance of a water distribution system, understanding pressure, head, friction loss, forces, water velocity, and size capacity relationships within a distribution system. Also covered are water meters, pump characteristics, sizing of pumps, water chemistry, introduction to water treatment, arithmetic, and administrative functions behind the distribution system. The class will include the Expected Range of Knowledge (ERK) required for the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) water distribution exam at D1 and D2 levels.

This course emphasizes the public health aspects of potable water supply, operation of wells, process control procedures, chlorination systems, water softening, treatment plant safety procedures, laboratory procedures, techniques and equipment, advanced water mathematics and California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Title 22 water quality regulations and standards. It includes processes required to treat source water into potable water. The course will include the Expected Range of Knowledge (ERK) required to pass the California State Water Resource Control Board (SWRCB) examination at the Water Treatment Operator I (T1) and Water Treatment Operator II (T2) levels for the certification requirements.

This course is designed to train operators in the practical aspects of operating and maintaining wastewater collection systems, emphasizing safe practices and procedures. The course focuses on the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential duties of an entry level collection system maintenance technologist. The course will include the Expected Range of Knowledge (ERK) required to pass the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Collection System Certification exam at the Collections System Maintenance Grade I and Grade II level.
